Schedule

Day 1: Viengthong- Son Koua (D)

Depart from Vieng Thong and travel for about 90 minutes through winding mountain roads until you reach the Khmu village of Son Koua, where you will meet your boat driver. Take part in a blessing to appease the spirits and then hop aboard a longtail boat and zip down the river with its stunning pristine scenery and lizards basking on the river banks.

Arrive at your campsite and hear a talk from the rangers about the endangered species that inhabit the park, in particular the rarest of all – the tiger. After your talk, board the boat and continue up stream to a salt lick, where animals gather to lick the salt from the ground. Watch as your guide points out and explains the tracks left by different animals.

Tonight you will venture into the darkness by boat for a night safari but not before your guide tries to spook you with local folk tales of ghosts and dragons!

Day 2: Houay Hai Salt Lick (B,L&D)

Rise and shine it’s time for breakfast and to start your trek to the Houay Hai Salt Lick. Along the way the guide will point out animal activity in the area and plants that are used in traditional medicine. Check the cameras that monitor the animal activity and have a picnic in the forest before heading back to camp.

This evening either hang around the campfire and exchange more spooky stories with your guides or go on another night safari along the river.

Day 3: Medicinal Plant Walk - Viengthong (B&L)

As the day breaks you will set off for a jungle trek to seek out medicinal plant with your guide. You will also hear the interesting history of the area and the secret war that took place when the Americans crossed into Laos during the Vietnam War years. Eat a well-earned breakfast before floating back to civilization where you can sample the local rice whiskey.
